A Hogan assessment is a set of online inventories from Hogan Assessment Systems that employers use to see how you work, what can trip you up under pressure, what motivates you and, sometimes, how you reason through business problems.1,3,6 There is no pass mark: your results are compared with a profile for the job.1,7 Take a free 12-item Hogan practice test in the current format, then follow the path for the instruments in your invitation.

What is a Hogan assessment?
A Hogan assessment is not one test but up to four instruments from Hogan Assessment Systems, sent by the employer as one online invitation.1,8 Hogan frames the three personality inventories as the bright side (how you work on a normal day), the dark side (strengths that turn into problems under pressure) and the inside (what drives you); the fourth is a timed reasoning test with right and wrong answers.1,6 The inventories describe your reputation: how coworkers are likely to see you at work.1 Your employer may use only one or two of the four.
| Instrument | What it shows | Format and length |
|---|---|---|
| Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) | Bright side: everyday work style on 7 scales, from Adjustment to Learning Approach | 4-point agreement; 206 statements in an older Hogan brochure; untimed, about 15–20 min2,3 |
| Hogan Development Survey (HDS) | Dark side: 11 derailers in 3 clusters, strengths overused under stress | 4-point agreement; 154 scored items (often reported as 168); about 15–20 min3,9 |
| Hogan MVPI (Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory) | Inside: 10 values and motives, culture fit | Agree / Uncertain / Disagree; 200 items; about 15–20 min3 |
| Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory (HBRI) | Reasoning with business data, rules and arguments: Qualitative and Quantitative | Multiple choice, right or wrong; 25–30 min on Hogan’s product page; about 24 items (reported)6,9 |

How long does the Hogan assessment take?
Hogan puts each personality inventory at about 15 to 20 minutes, and the reasoning test at 25 to 30 minutes on its product page (about 35 minutes in its FAQ).3,6 Plan about an hour for all three inventories plus about 30 minutes for the reasoning test. The inventories can be paused with autosave; the reasoning test cannot (distributor).8
Hogan assessment facts at a glance (2026)
Checked October 26, 2026 against Hogan’s FAQs, product pages and brochure; “reported” = prep sites and test takers- Who sends it
- The employer, as an email with a user ID, password and link to Hogan’s platform (distributor).8
- Answer format
- 4-point agreement without a middle for personality and derailers since 2018; Agree / Uncertain / Disagree for values.2,3
- Pass mark
- None. Results are compared with a profile for the job or job family; the same score can fit one role and be a watch-out in another.1,7
- Built-in checks
- A validity scale of 14 items that almost everyone answers the same way, and an impression management indicator.4
- Norms
- Global norms from 2018–2022 data, in use since June 2023; scores are percentiles, not percent right.2
- Reasoning test
- Subscales Qualitative and Quantitative since December 2019; it cannot be paused once started.6,8
- Feedback
- Candidates usually get none; the employer sees the report.1
- Faking
- Hogan: answer as you would in an interview. In its retest study of more than 5,000 rejected applicants, about 5% changed markedly six months later.5
Which Hogan test formats are outdated?
Many free videos and prep sites, including several popular 2025/26 videos, still describe a format Hogan no longer uses.10 What you may hear, and what Hogan uses today:
| What you may hear | What Hogan uses today |
|---|---|
| A 5-point scale with a neutral middle | Personality and derailers: 4 points (Strongly agree to Strongly disagree), no middle, since 2018. Values: Agree / Uncertain / Disagree.2,3 |
| True / False or Yes / No questions | The older format. Today every statement is rated on the agreement scale.2 |
| Forced choice: pick A or B, most and least like you | Single statements, one at a time. Forced choice belongs to other questionnaires.3,10 |
| Reasoning parts called Tactical and Strategic | Qualitative and Quantitative since December 2019; the old names appear only in older reports.6 |
| Answer like the ideal candidate, hit target percentiles | No single ideal profile: job profiles are set per employer, and validity and impression-management checks look for idealized answering.4,7 |
Which Hogan test is in your invitation?
The invitation usually names the instruments and says whether a timed reasoning test is included. Each has its own page with a free practice set in that format (linked in the table above).
| Your invitation says | What it is | Free practice there |
|---|---|---|
| “HPI”, “Hogan Personality Inventory” | Everyday work style | Statements with consistency pairs, response quality |
| “HDS”, “Development Survey” | Derailers under pressure | Statements with tendencies per derailer |
| “MVPI”, “Motives, Values, Preferences” | Values and culture fit | Agree / Uncertain / Disagree, your top values |
| “HBRI”, “Business Reasoning” | Timed reasoning with right answers | 10 timed items with worked answers |
Several names? Take the free practice test on this page: it mixes all four formats.
What does the Hogan personality questionnaire look like?
Short statements about how you work, rated one at a time, with no right answers and checks for careless or too-perfect answering. The timed reasoning part is the exception: it has right answers and is the part you can clearly train.4,6

How does Hogan Assessment Prep 2026 work?
One course, five paths. The start page asks which instruments your invitation names, then each path runs lesson, practice inventory or drill, simulation, interview and test day.
5:05Lesson HOW · the four instruments in five minutes
- 111 lessons
One instrument at a time
What each scale means, sample statements, what Hogan states and what is only reported. Ten lessons have a video, 43 minutes in total.
- 2Practice inventories
Profile, not score
Quick and full inventories in the current formats end on a practice profile: a bar per scale, response quality and interview hints. A practice estimate, never a Hogan score.
- 3Reasoning drills
The trainable part
Qualitative and Quantitative drills at three levels, 90 seconds an item (75 at level 3), a worked answer and the trap after every item.
- 4Simulations and interview
Like test day
Two timed reasoning runs of 24 items in 30 minutes, three full inventories, then a lesson that turns your profile into honest interview stories.

How should you prepare for a Hogan assessment?
Prepare the format, the scales and how you answer; train the reasoning part if it is in your invitation. Pick your situation.
Format first, then reasoning.
Read the invitation, open your path, and if a reasoning test is listed, give it most of the time.

Is a free Hogan practice test enough?
A few free statements show the look of the format. What free material rarely gives you is the current scale, a profile you can read and enough reasoning practice on a clock.

Hogan assessment FAQ: format, results, honesty
What does a Hogan assessment measure?
Up to four things: your everyday work style, the risks that show under pressure, your values and motives, and, if the employer adds the timed test, your business reasoning. Hogan calls the first three the bright side, the dark side and the inside.1
Is this Hogan practice test free?
Yes: 12 items in 9 minutes, no account and no email. You see how you answered the statements (no personality score), your reasoning items by section, and an explanation for every item.
Are these real Hogan questions?
No. All statements and items are written for our course in the current Hogan formats. Prepterminal is independent and not affiliated with Hogan Assessment Systems.
Can you pass or fail a Hogan assessment?
There is no pass mark. Hogan states that employers compare your results with a profile for the job or job family, so a score that fits one role can be a watch-out for another.1,7 Most candidates only hear whether they move to the next stage.
Is there a right answer on a Hogan personality test?
No, and there is no ideal profile. Higher is not automatically better on any scale. What matters is answering as your real work self, consistently and attentively.1,4
Can you fake a Hogan assessment?
Hogan says to answer as you would in a job interview and that distortion seems to backfire; in its retest study only about 5% of more than 5,000 rejected applicants changed markedly.5 Hogan also builds in validity and impression-management checks.4 A profile that is not you can also land you in the wrong job.
Can I pause the Hogan assessment?
The personality inventories can be paused and save your answers automatically; the timed reasoning test cannot be paused once it starts (distributor).8 Do the reasoning test in one sitting when you are fresh.
Do I get my Hogan results?
Usually not. Hogan’s FAQ says candidates typically get no feedback; the employer sees the report, with scores as percentiles compared with a norm group.1,2
Who uses Hogan assessments?
Employers in many fields: Hogan’s selection reports cover leaders and sales roles, and short screens exist for high-volume hiring.7 Forums and pilot-prep sites report that United Airlines pilots take the personality and derailer inventories before the interview.9 Your invitation shows which instruments your employer chose.
Can I take the Hogan assessment on my phone?
No source we found confirms phone support. Use a laptop or desktop: tables in the reasoning test are easier to read, and you can work without interruptions.
Can I retake a Hogan assessment?
Only if the employer allows it; an older report from pilot applicants mentions a 12-month wait. Retaking a personality inventory rarely changes much, while practice can raise the reasoning score.5,9
