intro-imgIntroduction to the CBP Test

The CBP test is used to determine whether the applicant is competent enough to take on the duties and responsibilities of a CBP officer. With this in mind, and with how extensive the hiring process and the test is, making good use of a CBP practice test should be your priority.

After all, the CBP enforces hundreds of laws and regulations for dozens of other agencies to prevent terrorists, illegal substances, contraband, and human traffickers from entering the United States – it stands to reason that they must be extremely discerning in who they admit to their ranks.

If the CBP were to hire the wrong person – be this due to incompetence, laziness, corruption or other such flaws, it would open up the potential for significant damage to the country.

The CBP test contains subjects that test the applicant’s reading, logical, and mathematical abilities.

Apart from the CBP fitness test/border patrol fitness test and the CBP polygraph test, the CBP entrance exam consists of four different sections:

Logical reasoning, arithmetic reasoning, writing skills, and work style (personal assessment).

It takes around four to six hours to complete the cognitive part of the CBP test. Let’s take a look at some of the individual sections:

Mechanical-ReasoningCBP Test – Logical Reasoning Section

This is usually the first part of the CBP test and it is used to measure candidates’ ability to understand written passages and draw reasonable conclusions.

The questions in this section of the border patrol exam involve reading passages that are related to the work of border protection or federal government.

Candidates are required to assess the information provided in the passage, and determine whether a given conclusion is accurate based on the premise of the statement. In other versions of this format, the candidate must select the most logical conclusion from the five response choices that are provided.

The logical reasoning part requires careful reading and focus. Note that the objective of this part is not to test your knowledge of the facts, but your critical thinking skills and your ability to conclude from the given passage.

This section of the CBP exam is commonly the reason why most applicants use a CBP practice test because there is no ‘definite’ answer on such questions and they could vary every year unless you know how these questions work to come up with a logical conclusion.

Numerical-ReasoningCBP Test – Arithmetic Reasoning Section

The arithmetic reasoning section is used in the border patrol entrance exam to assess the test taker’s skills in mathematical knowledge and reasoning.

They are to answer necessary arithmetic computations that consist of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. Some of the questions may involve calculation involving decimals, percentages, averages and rate, distance & time.

The few word-based problems in the CBP exam will require you to read and understand sentences or short paragraphs before conducting the necessary calculation.

For applicants who have trouble with calculation, this course contains tailored resources to help learn and master the concepts tested in the exam. The only good solution to such difficulty with mathematical concepts is thorough learning and practice.

peopleCBP Test – Work Style Section

The work style or personal assessment section is the last part of the CBP test. It assesses the candidate’s job-related experiences and achievements. The section consists of a questionnaire to examine an applicant’s skills and potentials.

Remember, the CBP test is also known, especially by those already in the industry, as the border patrol entrance exam so you can expect it to be highly scrutinous when it comes to your workstyle.

Applicants are allowed to take the test on their personal computer and they must ensure that the answers provided are honest and straightforward.

If you are interested in taking the CBP test, make sure you check the job requirements ahead of the exam date just in case you are required to bring any supporting documents.

Border-PatrolThe hiring process of the CBP is designed to be rigorous to prevent incompetent, unprepared, or potentially corrupt applicants from joining them.

Note that some of these steps may coincide or in a slightly different order depending on your application circumstances.

intro-imgThe CBP Polygraph Test or Border Patrol Polygraph Test

Candidates applying for a law enforcement role at the U.S Customs and Border Protection agency are required to undergo a border patrol polygraph exam and is usually part of the background investigation process of the CBP test.

The outcome of the CBP polygraph or border patrol polygraph test will help to determine if the applicant is suitable for the position of a law enforcement officer.

All information the agency collected on applicants, including their CBP polygraph exam results at the CBP test, will be kept for a minimum of two years and later use for future background investigations.

The CBP polygraph is often regarded as the most intimidating aspect of the CBP exam process, as the broad perception of this test is that you cannot game the system with such a precise instrument. While this may be true to a degree, it remains that there are certain methods you can master in order to avoid any physiological slips which could lead to assessors interpreting your responses as dishonest due to stress responses and similar issues. Our CBP polygraph guide is the most extensive and complete resource on the matter available online, and was produced exactly to help you approach this test without any fear.
