Every year, nearly 30% of the total applicants fail to hit the minimum AFQT score needed to enlist. That means losing the chance to serve or being locked into limited MOS options.
When you take the ASVAB Test for the Army — or the ASVAB Navy — your score doesn’t just decide if you can join. It also decides what kind of jobs you can get — like intelligence, cyber, medical, or mechanics.
ASVAB QuickPass for Army gets you ready fast. First, we make sure your AFQT score clears the 31 baseline (50 if you hold a GED). Then, we target the Army’s composite line scores (GT, ST, CO, EL, MM) that open the door to the MOS you actually want.
Take our free Army ASVAB practice test today and see where you stand.
What is the Army ASVAB Test?
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is the Army’s entry exam. It has two critical purposes:
AFQT Score
(1–99 percentile)
- Determines enlistment eligibility
- Calculated from AR, MK, WK, PC
- Higher AFQT = More enlistment options
Army Line Scores
MOS qualification
- Composites built from all 10 subtests
- Decide which MOS you qualify for
- Boost weak areas to expand MOS options
Army ASVAB Subtests
CAT-ASVAB has 10 subtests (Tests Auto Information & Shop Information separately) while P&P-ASVAB has 9 subtests (Combines Auto & Shop Information into one section). Below is the breakdown of questions and timing:
Subtest | CAT-ASVAB (Questions / Time) | P&P-ASVAB (Questions / Time) |
---|---|---|
General Science (GS) | 15 / 8 min | 25 / 11 min |
Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) | 15 / 39 min | 30 / 36 min |
Word Knowledge (WK) | 15 / 8 min | 35 / 11 min |
Paragraph Comprehension (PC) | 10 / 22 min | 15 / 13 min |

Mechanical Comprehension (MC) | 15 / 20 min | 25 / 19 min |
Assembling Objects (AO) | 15 / 15 min | 25 / 15 min |
AFQT drives enlistment eligibility; Line Scores determine MOS options.

Understanding ASVAB Scores for Army Enlistment
Your ASVAB results are split into two main parts that together determine enlistment eligibility and which Army jobs (MOS) you can pursue.
AFQT Score
Enlistment eligibility
- Minimum 31 with HS diploma
- Minimum 50 with GED
- Higher AFQT (e.g., 50+) can mean more bonuses & job options
Army Line Scores
Determine MOS eligibility
- Each composite uses a specific mix of subtests
- Meet or exceed the minimum for your target MOS
- Strengthen needed subtests to widen MOS choices
Army Line Score Composites
These composites group ASVAB subtests to match job families. Hit the minimum score for the MOS you want.
Composite | Subtests | Example MOS | Min Score |
---|---|---|---|
GT (General Technical) | WK + PC + AR | Intelligence Analyst (35F) | ≥ 101 |
CO (Combat) | WK + PC + AS + MC | Infantryman (11B) | ≥ 87 |
ST (Skilled Technical) | WK + PC + GS + MK + MC | Combat Medic (68W) | ≥ 101 |
EL (Electronics) | GS + AR + MK + EI | Cyber Ops Specialist (17C) | ≥ 98 |
MM (Mechanical Maintenance) | AS + MC + EI | Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic (91B) | ≥ 87 |
Tip: Identify your target MOS first, then work backward to the composite and its subtests to plan study time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How long are Army ASVAB scores valid?
Your Army ASVAB score is good for two years from the day you test. The same rule applies if you used the PiCAT and had it verified at MEPS.
What are the retake rules for the Army ASVAB?
If you don’t like your first Army ASVAB score, you can retest:
First retake: 1 month later
Second retake: another month after that
Third and beyond: every 6 months
Can I pick which Army ASVAB format I take?
No. The format depends on the testing location. Most recruits take the CAT-ASVAB at MEPS, while some may be given the paper-and-pencil version.
Does guessing hurt on the Army ASVAB?
On the CAT-ASVAB, rapid guessing near the end can actually lower your score. On the paper test, there’s no penalty—always fill in every blank.
Which parts of the Army ASVAB matter most?
The AFQT sections—Arithmetic Reasoning, Math Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension—decide if you can enlist. Beyond that, your Army line scores (like GT, ST, and CO) determine which Army jobs (MOS) you qualify for.
Does my Army ASVAB score work if I switch branches?
Yes. Your ASVAB score can transfer to other branches, but the Army’s minimums and job requirements are unique, so always check before switching.
